Energy is something many of us are thinking about more, due to the global energy crisis and the devastating effects harmful emissions are having on our planet. By choosing an energy-efficient boiler, you’ll be helping the crisis by playing your part in reducing energy use.
You’ll also help yourself at the same time, as boilers that use less energy cost less to run. So it’s win win!
Understanding how boilers are rated for efficiency
Every boiler is rated from A-G for efficiency, with an A-rated condensing boiler being the most efficient. Boilers also run at different levels of efficiency, indicating how much energy they can recycle. Newer boilers can run at levels of around 90% with some even higher.
Boiler types and efficiency levels
While different boiler types work in various ways and have the potential to be more or less efficient, you also need to consider how each type will work in your home. There’s little point in buying a boiler that doesn’t suit your needs, so choosing one that’s suitable as well as efficient is wise.
One popular boiler type is a combi, which heats water as you need it, meaning there’s no extra sitting around that has been heated but not used. This can make them very energy-efficient. The downside is they only usually suit smaller homes and homes with just one bathroom.
Regular and system boilers have their differences but both work by having water heated in advance, with it then sitting in a hot water cylinder. This has advantages, like the cylinder keeping it hot until you need it, but a disadvantage is the potential for waste if you heat too much. Both these boilers usually best suit larger houses or properties with more than one bathroom.
If they are condensing and A-rated, all of these boiler types have the potential to be extra energy-efficient so long as they are used carefully. This means not leaving heating or hot water on longer than needed, for example, and thinking about the energy you really need.
