What is a water softener and how does it work?
A water softener functions to eliminates the build-up of any limescale and harmful minerals before it reaches your taps. Without water softeners, your water will remain 'hard', and hard water is known to damage your internal plumbing system. The water softening device is meant to be connected to your home plumbing system, close to the incoming mains to ensure that all parts of the home can benefit from softened water.
An ion exchange water softener extracts the harmful calcium and magnesium ions (which together make up limescale) for harmless sodium ions and filters it out from the water.
As water is used in the home the hard water passes through a tank of resin beads, which extract the calcium and magnesium hardness ions and damages the plumbing system over time. Book your water softener installation today with us at Tim Reynolds Plumbing and Heating to ensure that you have soft water running throughout your house.
What happens when the water softener has removed all of the limescale?
You may be thinking that there is so only so much limescale that can build-up in your plumbing. What happens when your water is fully softened?
Well, once the resin beads have become exhausted and unable to extract any more hardness ions, they are refreshed by a process known as 'regeneration', where a brine solution is secreted and washed through the resin beads, removing the deposited limescale and refreshing the beads so that they can be ready again to make more softened water.
If you are wondering what happens as the extra sodium is added to the water supply, then you need not worry! The softening process adds a very small amount of extra sodium to your water supply which is perfectly safe to drink.
