Signs of a Plumbing Leak in Your Home

100's of millions of gallons of water is wasted every year by homeowners in the UK... the majority of which comes from unwary homeowners unable to spot plumbing leaks in their home.

Make sure you're not one of them...

We'll show you 5 ways you make sure you're not one of these unwary homeowners that's wasting water and needlessly increasing their water bills.

1. Check your water meter

The easiest way to check to see if you have a plumbing leak in your home is to turn off all of your toilets, taps and water-based appliances, i.e. dishwasher, washing machine etc. and check your water meter.

If your water meter is still ticking over, there's a good chance that you have a plumbing leak in your home.

2. Keep an eye on your water bill

If you've noticed that your water bill has skyrocketed out of the blue, and you've done nothing different compared to the previous month, there's a possibility that you have a plumbing leak.

Our recommendation is to look out for some of the other signs on this list, and if you've noticed any, get in touch with a plumber.

If you can't see any of the other signs, wait for your next water bill. If it's still the same high price, there's a good chance that you have a plumbing leak somewhere in your house.

3. Musty smelling rooms

Sometimes plumbing leaks aren't always visible with the naked eye.

Instead you need to use your other senses - smell.

If you have mould growing beneath your floorboards, or inside your walls, you'll be able to smell it. And if it smells musty, there's a good chance that you have a plumbing leak.

4. Stained & Damaged Ceilings, walls & floors

Keep an eye out for stains, no matter how small they are.

If you've noticed a brown patch on your ceiling, or a sagging wall, or a floorboard that sinks a little when you step on it, take action fast.

Whilst these issues might not look like much and they might start off small, they will accumulate. And when they do accumulate, it can lead to disasters.

Call a plumber and act fast.

5. Visible mould

It's okay to have a little bit of mould in your shower (it's mostly as a result of the hot running water and high temperatures), but if you've noticed mould outside of the shower, i.e. on the floors of your bathroom or maybe on the walls of your kitchen, there's a high chance that you have a plumbing leak.
