We’ve all experienced a faulty boiler at one time or another, and on occasions it can be hard to know how to deal with the issue in hand.
Do you invest in a potentially costly repair that doesn’t guarantee the long-term function of the unit, for example, or should you invest in a new boiler that comes with an extended manufacturer’s warranty?
We’ll consider this below, whilst appraising the key considerations to keep in mind at all times:
1. How Old is your Boiler?
We start with the most important consideration, as the age of your boiler will have a key bearing on whether you decide to repair or replace the unit.
If you own an older, non-condensing unit, for example, the replacement parts for this type of boiler can be extremely expensive. They may also be hard to source, leaving your boiler out of action for a considerable period of time.
In this case, it may be a false economy to invest in repairing your old boiler, especially if it develops recurring faults that cause the cost of maintenance to accumulate rapidly.
2. Does your New Boiler Come with an Extended Warranty?
This brings us neatly on the subject of the manufacturer’s warranty, which will most likely have expired on older boiler units.
However, by investing in a new boiler from a reputable brand you can often secure an extended warranty, and one that can cover a period of 12 years or more from the moment of purchase.
This negates the need for any paid repairs going forward, triggering long-term savings that really add up over time.
3. How Efficient is your Existing Boiler?
Even if you own an older boiler that’s working relatively well, it’s important to note that non-condensing units are at least 20% less efficient that newer, A-rated alternatives.
Make no mistake; newer units are often more than 90% efficient, whilst they can also save you an estimated £300 on your energy bills over the course of a typical 12-month period.
These savings should be factored into your decision, as they can help you to recoup your new boiler investment over a relatively short period of time.
