Are you looking for a plumber in Verwood, Dorset, or any of the surrounding areas?
We've answered all of your frequently asked questions about plumbing so you know what's what before you give us a call.
I have or I think I have a leaking pipe, what do I do?
If you think you have a leaking pipe (look out for mould signs on your roof, the sounds of drips, damp floorborards etc. if you're not sure) our first bit of advice is stop any running water immediately and turn off your water.
We'd also recommend:
- Switching off your heating system
- Switching off any electrics that you think might be affected by the leak
- Finding something to catch or soak up the water
Once you've done the above, contact a local plumber to isolate and identify the leak.
How do I avoid frozen pipes?
If your boiler hasn't worked as a result of a frozen condensate pipe in the past, and you're worried that it might happen again, our best advice is to contact your local plumber and ask them to cover the exposed areas with lagging to help keep them insulated.
In addition to that, you can also protect your pipes by:
- Servicing your boiler on an annual basis
- Running your boiler / heating at least once during the warm summer months
- Keeping your heating on low
- Repairing faults as soon as you spot them.
My pipes have frozen, what do I do?
If you unfortunately haven't had chance to lag your pipes, our first recommendation as usual is for you to switch off your water.
You'll then need to open the faucet closest to the frozen pipe (as if you were turning your tap on to produce running water) thaw the pipe with a low heat (not too hot as this can cause damage in itself by causing too much water to thaw through your heating system - try a hot towel or a hairdryer) and then slowly move the heat from the faucet towards the coldest part of the pipe.
Do not use an open flame on your pipes!
Why are my radiators cold?
If your radiators have cold spots, or they're cold at the top but warm at the bottom, there's a good chance that they need to be bled.
You can grab a bleed key from most DIY stores, and all you'll need to do then is switch off your heating system, wait for it to cool down and then turn the valve at the top of your radiator to allow the air to escape.
You'll need a cloth to catch and leaks or drips from the valve.
As soon as the water begins to flow, tighten the valve and repeat the process on any other affected radiators.
Why do I always run out of hot water?
If you find that you always run out of hot water, there's a good chance that your boiler isn't powerful enough for your needs.
Upgrade your boiler and ensure you have enough hot water for everybody in your home.
